Cows, and life
I was reading something about cow tipping..
ya know where ya grab a cow and flip em..[cowtipping]
made me think of a wintry night in Cowboy Heaven Montana,
I was checking the herd about 3 am for new calves, at the ranch we rode the herd every 3 hours.. more often if the weather was bad..
ya know.. like -25 degrees..and snowing..
anyway we had this ol bramer cow..good cow.. but meaner than freakin mean after she calved.. and of course she calved on my check..
I sat my pony for awhile trying to decide how best to do this..having had experience with this ol hide before.. she was bad to the bone..the year before she had tried to join me in the back of the truck while I tagged and doctored that calf.. after knocking my horse out from under me, I’d brought the truck out..
much to the amusement of the cowboys.
I uncoiled my rope.. knowing I would have one chance to get her.. I was never much of a roper.. although I spent lots of time doing it.
After dropping a rope round her sweet lil neck, I wrapped it around a tree with a half hitch..
well the calf was bawling, she was blowing snot.. and I was just a bit worried, about getting her loose after I was done doctoring this baby..
So I gave the calf a shot of selenium, dipped his navel..and looked at his momma..
she wanted to eat me for lunch.. she was mad and bad as only a Brahma cow can be..
well.. I studied the situation for awhile and in the meantime.. she had wrapped herself so tight , she went down..
I took that golden opportunity to stroll over and jerkin the rope.. which had become jammed over itself..
well I cut that rope.. that cow dragged it from her neck for 2 months.. and everytime..
one of the ranch hands saw her, they had to tell me .. while I had her upside down.. I shoulda spent some time petting her, to sweeten her disposition.
That calf of hers never did get a ear tag, till we branded , some months later..
Them ol cows..
