Witchcraft

Some friends of mine are missionaries to Mozambique living with the Lolo people.. I received this email from them this am…

Dear Pet,
Things are going well here and we have hit the long uphill grind in language learning, but that does not mean that life here is getting boring by any means. Last week there was a justice killing in our area although about 5 km away. We will tell the story from the perspective of the people, not that we claim to agree with or know the truth at all points.

- There was an older grandfather who was known to be a witch doctor. One of his family members died and as is custom, the day after the funeral the men of the family gathered to decide if they would find out who caused the death. In this case, the men decided to find out so they went to a local diviner who said the grandfather had killed the child with witchcraft. Another person in the same family died and again the men decided to find out
the cause but this time they consulted another diviner who pointed to the same man. This repeated a third and forth time, each time the men going to a different diviner from farther and farther away from the area. Each time the different diviners gave the same answer: the old grandfather was the killer by his witchcraft. The family said, “He is going to end up killing us all with his witchcraft.”

What is certain is that after the fourth time, the man’s own sons set up an ambush. Two sons hid in the bushes on a hill while another took the father to them on bicycle. When the father got off the bike to walk up the hill, he was cut down instantly by his sons with machetes. Whatever the truth may be in this situation one thing is true, the family believed that the man was truly guilty of killing his relatives and the actions they took were irreversible. On the outside the people seem quite normal and there are even scattered “churches”. If the Lolo are famous for one thing in Mozambique, it is the powerful witchcraft.

Prayer Points:
.. Pray for continued good relationships and language lessons.
.. Pray that God would show us how we can even now show that we have a
hope and confidence of which they do not know.
.. Pray that one day the Lolo no longer be blinded by fear but live in
the confidence in the power of Jesus Christ who died to set us free.

By His grace alone for His glory,
Matt & Debi
