In China, there is an alternate universe where every thing Olympic is just peachy.
In “that other universe” a beautiful and talented child is made to sing off the camera because she had less than perfect teeth and that’s OK. Pastor’s are arrested on their way to worship, and that’s OK.
It’s also OK to lie and use computer generated fireworks to “protect the stadium” on opening night.

In China you do what you’re told, when you’re told or you face the very real consequences.
Like you get detained, and then pretty much you disappear, until such time that China feels its attempts to re-educate you have worked. Or you have died, depending.

You can be sent for re-education any time the communist powers that be decide that your not playing nice. That is to say by their rules. You have to be a certified lunatic to know which rules apply, or be a minister in charge of who’s-on-first.

Because you see the rules thing in China shifts fairly rapidly.
It’s OK to falsify age records of underage gymnasts to make them eligible to compete-after all win at any cost right?
Ugly buildings no problem just like in the old west movies, you build artificial facades to hide the ugliness.

Or take for instance the three parks set aside for lawful protest during the Olympics. This is how it’s supposed to work; you fill out a form; you get a protest in the park sticker that says you get to protest whatever particular your complaint may be, and in China, they are myriad. You hold your protest and you go home, feeling much better, not that you changed anything, but that you had a lawful opportunity to protest.

But wait! Of the 77 brave souls who applied for permits to protest were either withdrawn or rejected. Seventy-seven requests received no one got a protest in the park sticker, and those that pushed the issue, including two seventy some year old ladies, got an invitation to spend a delightful year at Government expense, doing hard labor while being reeducated.
